The Persuaders

In the documentary, The Persuaders, it is addressed that the job of advertisers is to tailor the promotion of consumerism to our culture and its ideals. The idea is to target a specific audience in order to get the desired outcome.

An effective way to do this is through the use of language. Advertisers use positive connotations of words in order to portray a general message that consumers will find appealing. Using the word "simple" sound so relaxing and is especially appealing when advertisers put a period after it. Simple. It goes without saying that words like "beauty," "fast," and "happy" almost always receive positive reactions from consumers. Using homographs in a cleaver pun or play of words is always a clever, and catchy, marketing trick that establishes credibility and makes an audience more likely to accept the claim of an ad.

Another method of advertising is to associate a product with a desirable reality so that the product is perceived as desirable. For instance, if the product being sold is water, and the ad consists of picture of pure-looking water sources and happy people drinking the water, people will be more likely to purchase the product. Pure water sources and happy people is an extremely desirable reality and the association between that and the water being sold makes the consumer believe that this product will give them that reality.

The enclosed picture exhibits the use of these techniques well.  https://www.pinterest.com/pin/586945763916489384/

The use of the term "friendly advise" being used in lieu of "psychiatric help" makes the customer more likely to listen because they don't feel some much that their character is being personally attacked. The use of the word "friendly," which has many meanings to different people, all of them positive, makes Snoopy's booth seem like a more pleasant place to be. The use of the word "adviser " over "doctor" has a similar effect. The use of these specific terms would signify a better experience and better outcome to the costumer trying to decide between the two booths. Because of this, Snoopy would be more successful than Lucy in the therapy industry.

People are so susceptible to manipulation by advertisers. This has become a part of our culture.
